Measles outbreak
There are currently several measles outbreaks in the US, most notably in NY City and in the Pacific Northwest, but there have now been a handful of cases documented locally in Spencerport. These local cases have all been in unimmunized children.
If you child is not vaccinated, please strongly consider doing so. A single dose of measles-containing vaccine is about 93% effective in preventing measles, with a series of 2 vaccines about 97% effective.
At this time, the local outbreak is isolated enough such that the health department is not recommending giving extra or early doses of the measles vaccine to fully immunized children.
For further information on measles, including suspicious symptoms, there is an excellent article here on the Healthy Children website. If you think your child may have the measles, please call us to have them further evaluated.
