Medication refill/renewal process
As of May 20, 2023, we will be discontinuing prescriptions requested by phone. There are convenient ways patients can request refills (through the pharmacy and the patient portal). By streamlining this process, we can act on requests in a timely, more efficient fashion.
We often use the term “refill” and “renewal” interchangeably, but they are two different things. Prescriptions are often sent for 30 days’ worth of medication, with a certain number of refills. This means when you are low, you can call the pharmacy directly and they will give you a refill (another 30-day supply without having to contact us). When those refills are used up, you must then contact us (via the portal) to renew the medication with the pharmacy. This is a prescription renewal.
For refills remaining on a prescription, you may contact the pharmacy directly.
Medication management and frequent appointments are important to maintain safety, good health and stay up-to-date on care plans. We routinely schedule medication check-up appointments. Renewals are dependent on attending these appointments.
How to request a refill through the portal:
When logged into the portal, you can access your (or your child’s) current medication list. Select the medication you need and send us a renewal request. This one-minute video illustrates the process.
Note, controlled substances are not allowed to have refills. We need to be contacted for every prescription in these instances. Some pharmacies do not allow electronic refill requests for controlled medications. This includes stimulants such as Adderall, Concerta, Focalin and Ritalin. Renewal requests for these medications must be initiated through the patient portal.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.
